Live / Work Space

Year Completed: 1998
This 1,500 square foot former garment sweatshop was converted into a multivalent space that is simultaneously an apartment, office, design studio, and sometimes fabrication shop. The project, accomplished with very modest means, retains much of the hard, industrial quality already there, while intervening with structures that are more refined and tectonic in language. A fiberboard “living-module” containing a Bedroom, Kitchen, Bathroom, and storage was inserted into an existing alcove. The remaining space, left mostly open, is dominated by a table and light fixture, both incorporating recycled materials. The Living Module Box is cracked open, not only to reveal its structure, as the horizontal slit allows cross-ventilation for the Bedroom.
